How Many MG's of CBD? Key Dosing Questions
January 14, 2019
Ahhh...the magic question. How much?
Why do they make this so difficult to understand?
Every brand seems to have their own ways to measure CBD oil.
This can be a little confusing.
Let's look at the magic formula you can apply to everyone and more importantly, we'll allow you to be lazy and use our new CBD Dropper Calculator tool.
Part of our CBD Toolkit. Later in the article, we'll also touch on rules for dosage.
We'll also point to research on how much CBD to take for key issues like anxiety, addiction, depression, and more.
Also, there's a simple trick to boost the bioavailability (how much gets into your system) by up to 4x's.
This is the same as reducing your cost by 4x's! Really important with CBD. More on that below.
Let's get right into the question.
There's CBD to be had!
We'll cover the practical questions first.
How to calculate the milligrams (mg) of CBD in a dropper of CBD oil.
First, we need to know this basic information:
- Volume of liquid in your bottle
- Amount of total CBD in the full bottle
- Amount of liquid in a dropper
Some basic ground rules.
Volume of Liquid in your CBD bottle
First, most CBD oil bottles come in 30 ml volumes. This is approximately the equivalent of 1 ounce.
They're about the same!
Some brands have different multiples of this...i.e. 60 ml or 2 ounces.
We'll assume the 30 ml or 1 ounce since it's the standard and we can apply the same rule.
Total CBD in a 30 ml bottle
This gets a little confusing and we can blame the brands for this.
They can have very different ways of saying the same thing or worse yet...misleading people.
We want the total mg of CBD in the bottle.
Not phytocannabinoids. Not hemp oil. Not hemp oil extract. Not cannabinoids.
See all the different ways they dance around the real question.
CBD.
How much CBD in mg's does the bottle have?
This is easy with IndigoNaturals:
- 1000 mg of CBD
- 2000 mg of CBD
- 6000 mg of CBD
We want it to be obvious and transparent.
In fact, if you look at the 3rd party testing, our bottles can actually have more CBD than what's listed.
We want to underpromise and over-deliver.
Why?
All the research is on CBD.
Everything else is just feel-good marketing.
Save it!!
We've even asked HUGE brands how much CBD is in their bottles and they couldn't specify.
We're talking about brands that are selling millions of bottles per year.
Can't say.
Or won't say.
Anyway, we'll get off our soapbox.
Once you know the amount of CBD in the bottle, what about the dropper liquid volume?
Volume of liquid in a CBD dropper
For this standard size, the dropper usually has 1 ml of total liquid.
This assumes a full dropper.
Now, we're getting someplace.
MG of CBD per dropper math
Here we go.
Since there's about 30 droppers worth of liquid in a 30 ml bottle…
We can take the total CBD in the bottle and divide by 30!!
For example:
- 1000 mg of CBD bottle = approx 33 mg per full dropper
- 2000 mg of CBD bottle = approx 66 mg per full dropper
- 6000 mg of CBD bottle = approx 200 mg per full dropper
Nice. Easy. Transparent.
That's our goal at IndigoNaturals.
Now that we know how much is in a dropper, how do we use this information?
Dropper of CBD and dosage
We wrote an entire article on CBD doses.
Let's incorporate that into our calculation.
Introductory and wellness does are generally around 20-30 mg of CBD.
That's about:
- 1 full dropper of the 1000 mg bottle CBD
- ½ a dropper of the 2000 mg bottle CBD
- ⅕ a dropper of the 6000 mg bottle CBD (pretty small amount)
Most people, however, are getting CBD to address more serious issues.
Sleep studies are showing doses of about 160 mg.
Research on serious issues range from 300-600 mg doses PER DAY
Think about that.
Probably the biggest tip we have deals with neurogenesis - repair and replenishment of brain cells!
This is the critical piece for mental health, addiction, and more.
Check out CBD and brain repair to learn more.
The key is this - peak neurogenesis occured at 300 mg daily per research.
The 6000 bottle of CBD makes that pretty easy but the 1000 and 2000 would require quite a bit.
That's a lot of coconut oil you have to consume to get there.
Again, for most people, try the 1000 mg bottle to see how your body likes it.
Then go up from there accordingly.
This is the logical progression and one reason we aim to make Indigo Naturals the most affordable option per mg of CBD.
Seriously...check out the pricing per mg and you'll see what we're aiming to do (help more people get the benefit of CBD).
We intentionally price our 6000 bottles at 2-3 cents per mg before discounts up to 50%.
What if we want to go even smaller?
How many drops of CBD in one full dropper?
There are approximately 20 drops of liquid in 1 ml dropper.
This gets a little trickier but here we go:
- 1000 mg CBD bottle dropper has about 1.5 mg per drop
- 2000 mg CBD bottle dropper has about 3 mg per drop
- 6000 mg CBD bottle dropper has about 9-10 mg per drop
That really comes into play with the 6000 mg CBD bottle when we're trying to get just a wellness or trial dosage.
For example, 30 mgs might be about 3-4 drops.
A couple of quick pointers for getting the most of each mg of CBD
There are some general guidelines.
First, take CBD after a meal...preferably your fattiest meal.
This can increase the bioavailability by 4x's!!
Think of what that means.
¼ dropper now FEELS like a full dropper if you take it after a meal rather than on an empty stomach.
Always place the CBD oil under the tongue for 30-60 seconds.
This can double the absorption of CBD.
Finally, take CBD at least 2-4 hours away from medication.
